- Gilb'R and I:Cube have selected 25 highlights from the French label's two decades in the game.
Details of the Versatile Records 20th anniversary compilation have been revealed.
1996-2016: Versatile Records 20 Years is coming out on May 27th on CD and digital formats. Its 25 tracks have been selected by founder Gilb'R in partnership with I:Cube, a core label artist who recently put together a mixtape for Versatile celebrating his period of musical discovery in the early-to-mid '90s.
"Between the time when we were hand-stickering our first release in the living room of my former apartment at Rue de la Goutte d'Or and today, 20 years have passed," says Gilb'R. "That's 20 years in which I have tried to show inventiveness, perseverance and [an element of] surprise. The surprise comes primarily from the artists, who've been my main motivation as well as my source of energy during all this time."
I:Cube picked the selections that represent the label's first ten years—1996 through 2006—while Gilb'R handled the more recent output, with a focus on the past three years. Artists like Pépé Bradock, Joakim, Etienne Jaumet, Acid Arab and The Maghreban all feature.
