  • Versatile Records has released a mini-mix of tracks from I:Cube's cassette archives. I:Cube, real name Nicolas Chaix, says the inspiration for the mix came from a fertile period of musical discovery between 1990 and '96. (Versatile Records launched in 1996, with I:Cube providing the label's first record.) In that time he says he soaked up the sounds of FM radio in France—including Radio Nova, where Versatile founder Gilb'R worked—as well as bargain finds at Parisian flea markets. Chaix recorded the Chansons Du Siècle Dernier (1990-1996) mini-mix as a homage to that time. "The mix is a bit difficult to stomach when you listen to it, is interspersed with short radio extracts which take us back to the atmosphere of the period," he says. "The absolute roughness and lack of sophistication of it, the naivety and the passion make it all the more charming." Versatile in celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016 with a run of parties and a compilation curated by I:Cube and Gilb'R. Listen to the mix in full.
