  • Two of the main forces behind How To Kill Records, Marshall Applewhite and The Friend, will headline a show in LA this weekend. The label, which Detroit's F.A.M.E. collective launched in 2013, offers a fresh take on the city's house and techno legacy. In an interview with Ransom Note, The Friend described the How To Kill sound—often referred to as "sludge"—as "unfiltered, unhinged, trashy, kind of pitched down. Built around the energy and not so much the fluidity. It's not supposed to be smooth. It's jarring." Applewhite added: "It's not meant for digital consumption as much as white label. You're not opening with these tracks, you play 'em late. You play 'em slow." The Detroiters will be joined in LA by Andrew Kelly, Dahlia and Canadian-born Veteran Derek Michael. The event will happen somewhere near the LA river, with the address to go out the day of. Listen to clips of the fourth How To Kill 12-inch, released back in February, below.
