- DeFeKT is taking on a new alias to help inaugurate Richard Brophy's new label.
A new Dublin label called First Cut will launch in May.
First Cut is the brainchild of Richard Brophy, a journalist who covers techno and electro (he's a former RA contributor). Its first release comes courtesy of fellow Dublin resident Matt Flanagan. You might know Flanagan, a producer, live act and DJ, through his DeFeKT and E.S.S. aliases (and the Tinfoil collaboration with Sunil Sharpe), but for First Cut he's unveiled a new moniker, Octal Step.
The EP, Toner Head, is sourced from a half-hour recording of Flanagan jamming on his machines. Flanagan and Brophy picked out three sections, and agreed to release them "over a cup of takeaway coffee on a bench in the Stephen's Green Centre in Dublin." Toner Head will come in a vinyl edition limited to just 100 copies. An insert will feature a photo of the German undercover journalist Günter Wallraff.
Listen to the whole thing below, ahead of its release in May.
