- The California artist's '80s work, sung in an invented language, will be released via the New York label in February.
RVNG Intl. will release Breadwoman & Other Tales from Anna Homler and Steve Moshier on February 4th.
The label describes the story behind Breadwoman, laying out a scene in which Homler "is driving an ocean blue classic Cadillac to meet renowned poet and playwright Deena Metzger in Topanga Canyon, LA. Passing a nondescript desert patch where tall wheat and mustard flowers grow, Anna opens her mouth and sings in a salient stream of rhythmic, melodic sound." This enchanted language would go on to inspire Breadwoman, a 1985 collaboration with Steve Moshier, a musician who played with a communal avant-garde urban chamber music ensemble called the Cartesian Reunion Memorial Orchestra.
Homler came up with the Breadwoman character for her work with Moshier, channeling a woman who is "so very old she's turned into bread." While Homler's "vocalese" and Moshier's minimal production touches make for a unique combination, RVNG says the music is influenced by performance art, DIY punk, gallery culture, underground tape trading and new age mysticism. Breadwoman is the latest in the ReRvng series, which has unearthed works by other American outsiders like K. Leimer and Craig Leon in recent years.
