  • Unsound has been accused of promoting Satanism by the Catholic Church in Poland. In a statement posted to the Unsound site, organisers explain that the trouble began with a letter sent to St Catherine's, a 16th century church occasionally used for festival performances. An unnamed person or group claimed Unsound "promotes and propagates Satanism," taking issue with the upcoming appearance of Current 93, a British experimental outfit headed up by David Tibet. Tibet, a producer and vocalist, frequently alludes to mysticism, religion and witchcraft in his work, and is heavily inspired by numerous fields of theology. St. Catherine's Church informed Unsound organisers that they had been asked by the Catholic Church to cancel Current 93's concert, which was scheduled for October 16th. A replacement venue is now being sought. Unsound's post also includes a statement from David Tibet. In it, he denies the "laughable slurs" and explains: "My work may sometimes be unorthodox and misunderstood by those holding different views to my own, but I have stated on many, many occasions that I am Christian." The festival runs from October 11th through 18th. Read an excerpt from Unsound's statement below.
As the organisers of Unsound, we of course categorically deny that Satanism is now or has ever been promoted at our festival. The goal of the Unsound festival has always been bringing artists and audiences together in the promotion of art and culture. There has never been any political ideology or religious motivation behind the festival programming. And, moreover, the organisers of the festival have always appreciated the hospitality of Krakow churches, where over the span of several years many concerts have taken place.
