- Demdike Stare's label will host Gruidés, the Sunn O))) founder's first orchestral composition.
Stephen O'Malley's first orchestral work, Gruidés, will see release on DDS next week.
O'Malley is an experimental musician best known as the founder of pivotal drone doom band Sunn O))). He was approached last year by French pianist Frédéric Brody, a member of the French improv orchestra ONCEIM, who asked O'Malley to write a piece for the troupe (and to "just be punk rock about it").
Gruidés is the result. It's a lengthy piece that requires musicians in the 35-piece orchestra "to sustain pitches for several minutes... yielding a gloaming spectra of eliding dissonance rent in sliding tone clusters and lucent geometries," with the label comparing its percussive sensibilities to O'Malley's recent collaboration with Scott Walker. The performance was recorded live at the Saint Merry Church in Paris.
