  • Tangerine Dream's Edgar Froese has died. According to a post on the band's Facebook page, the German artist passed away "suddenly and unexpectedly" due to a pulmonary embolism he suffered in Vienna. He was 70. Froese was the man behind the legendary band Tangerine Dream, founding it in 1967 and remaining the only constant member through its decades of output. The group would revolutionize synth music and krautrock—shaping what came to be known the Berlin School of electronic music—and has proved to be an enduring influence on electronic music producers in both the dance world and in more experimental realms. You can read the band's statement in full below.
Dear Friends, This is a message to you we are very sorry for… On January 20th, Tuesday afternoon, Edgar Froese suddenly and unexpectedly passed away from the effects of a pulmonary embolism in Vienna. The sadness in our hearts is immensely. Edgar once said: “There is no death, there is just a change of our cosmic address." Edgar, this is a little comfort to us. Yours, TANGERINE DREAM TEAM
