- The recordings were originally released by Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Recordings and will re-emerge on vinyl in January.
Dais Records will release a new edition of William Burroughs' Nothing Here Now But The Recordings in January 2015.
TG members Genesis P-Orridge and Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson struck up a friendship with the beat legend via a classified ad in FILE magazine. P-Orridge had heard of Burroughs' tape experiments, made utilising Brion Gysin's cut-up technique in the late '50s and '60s, and spent nearly a decade convincing the writer to sanction their release. Finally, in 1981, after a period of tireless archive and restoration work, the recordings emerged as the final transmission on Industrial Records. The experiments for voice can be compared to a surrealist take on Alvin Lucier's "I Am Sitting In A Room."
In addition to the cut-up technique, Burroughs also employed EVP recording techniques, pioneered by Latvian intellectual Konstantins Raudive. One of the earliest recordings on Nothing Here... was recorded at the Parisian Beat Hotel, where Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch. Dais Recordings has a history of working with P-Orridge, having been responsible for reissues of Psychic TV, COUM Transmissions and other related projects.
P-Orridge recently spoke on his relationship with Burroughs and the origins of the project. Check out the interview below.
