  • Two members of The Black Dog have revealed details of a new project called Application. Application is the work of Richard and Martin Dust. Their first album, System Fork, will see release on the brother's Dust Science Recordings. The project is inspired by the lengthy learning process of Itamae (Japanese cooks). According to a press release, the brothers spent two years in the planning stage "before a set of rules and principles were fully realised for the creative process in the studio." "After visiting Japan our host told us about Itamae, where they would do nothing but watch the Sushi Master for five years before being given their first task," says Martin in a Q&A on the Application Tumblr. "This made perfect sense and looking back it’s something I've been doing since a child—imagining projects real." Martin adds: "With The Black Dog we have no plan or rules, we go into the studio and do what we want. With Application that isn't the case, there's a set of rules and an internal manifesto. The two groups are not musically interchangeable in any form." There's also a strong visual element to Application, with Human and Shaun Bloodworth called on to take care of the project's artwork, videos and photographs. (You can watch the first video below). A live show is also in the pipeline. The Black Dog (which also counts Ken Downie among its number) have kept busy in recent times, building MIDI controllers, launching the Sound Of Sheffield EP series and releasing the Tranklements album.
