  • Art Department will headline Lovelife's two-year anniversary on this Friday, August 23rd. The series was started two years ago by Jon Dadon of Music Is 4 Lovers and Jimbo James of outLIFE, a collaboration that was meant to provide "a slower, sexier, and more intimate party experience." Their events (which usually come with a dress code or theme for each shindig) have since become a distinctive entity in the city. So far Lovelife have featured acts like Damian Lazarus, PillowTalk, Tornado Wallace, Lee Foss, Matt Tolfrey and more. Most of those gigs were the first time that any of these artists had played in San Diego. The shows take place across a variety of local venues, with dress-up themes like pirates, "Sexmas In July" and even a masquerade ball. The Art Department party is the second of a two-part celebration, the first of which happened last week on the rooftop of the Hotel Palomar with frequent guests Thugfucker. That one had an all-white theme, and the one taking place this Friday has an all-black theme to contrast, with the Toronto duo billed as a deliberately dark counterpoint to the pool's sunnier sounds (as is the underground venue Bassmnt). For support, Dadon will play back-to-back with Surface Recordings associate Halo, while Lovelife resident Marbs will open the evening's proceedings. For a peek at what the parties look like, Lovelife have a video section over at their website, while Dadon's Music Is 4 Lovers has its own podcast series which you can find on their SoundCloud page.
