  • In addition to our comprehensive Ibiza microsite, once again this year we'll be bringing you a weekly dose of news, reviews and assorted tomfoolery from the island. This week, RA's Chandler Shortlidge talks about changes to the island's clubs. Resident Advisor hosted a panel at IMS this year, moderated by our own Grego O'Halloran, which discussed the year of change here in Ibiza. The panel discussed mainly the new lineups and DJs on the island this year, but the clubs have also seen some change—some subtle, some not.
The newest edition to the island club-wise this summer is Plan Be, located in Poligono Ca Na Palava, about five kilometers outside of Ibiza Town. Early on during its opening party last week, Russ Yallop mixed his way through sexy deep house in front of triple-stacked shipping containers lined with sandbags, which worked as both the back of the club and the DJ booth, while several hundred clubbers danced happily under camo netting. He gave way to the duo Infinity Ink, who kept the vibe grooving with tracks like "Pain 'n' Love" by HNQO into the night. Unfortunately, authorities shut the club around 12:30 PM, much to the dismay of the decent-sized crowd. Local Ibiza newspaper Diario de Ibiza described the shutdown as a failure to obtain proper licensing in time for the opening. Plan Be's Facebook page, meanwhile, states that their "legal team is now negotiating with the authorities." We'll keep you updated on the progress as more news becomes available. From there it was time for the opening night of the world's largest club, Privilege, to check out the Vista Club, better known to older Ibiza-goers as what used to be La Vaca and Coco Loco—now combined into one space. It's been revamped, allowing clubbers to again experience the sunrise through the wide-angled windows, which extend along the entire right and rear wall, providing views all the way down to the bay of Ibiza. Such was the case as Supernova played the early morning set, starting with disco-tinged tracks like their remix of "Can You Feel It" by Chez Damier, then moving on to darker, techier territory ala the dub mix of their collaboration with DJ Chus, "Italoberican Grooves." Barcelona club night Elrow provided the visual entertainment, in what made for a strange, albeit festive atmosphere, dropping inflatable pool toys on the crowd while maniacally laughing clowns on stilts drooled, and cowboys and Indians chased one another about. Even once the club was less rammed—and most of the toys were popped or taken home—the core group of clubbers kept the energy high well into the morning. Photos: Privilege Opening Party
In contrast to an entirely new club—or a new room at an existing one—Pacha's decision this year to move the location of the DJ booth seems like a subtle change. The new booth at the famed venue is hydraulic, meaning the artists can either be level with the audience, or a few feet up. Also, this year the DJs are on camera, which streams to two projectors. One broadcasts onto a wall up in the Terrace without sound, while the other is shown on the wall directly to the left as you enter the foyer on your way to the main room. The Funky Room has also had a slight makeover: There's now a glass wall which, when covered by a curtain, acts as a perfect barrier between the two rooms, but can be pulled back and used as an extra VIP area for larger events. Finally this week, we wanted to draw your attention to something a bit special: Resident Advisor will be streaming audio live from We Love… at Space Ibiza this year for the first time. The Opening Fiesta of the series kicks off this Sunday, so visit the event page linked below to hear sets live from the island as they happen.
