  • James Ruskin and Mark Broom will release an album as The Fear Ratio through Blueprint this November. In terms of UK techno, there's few who can match the credentials of Mark Broom and James Ruskin. Broom has been active on the scene since back in the early '90s and has the discography to back it up. R&S, Soma, Mo-Wax and Warp have all given a home to his productions down the years, while more recently it's been Nic Fanciulli's Saved Records—with whom he last year released Acid House—who have been the primary outlet for his classicist techno excursions. Ruskin first made his mark a little later than Broom but not by much. He set up his Blueprint imprint in 1996 and has since released countless numbers of his own 12-inches alongside his work for revered Berlin imprint Tresor. In terms of their work in tandem, Broom and Ruskin have released a trio of 12-inches together over the past 12 months but none thus far as The Fear Ratio. Although Light Box isn't a step away from the dance floor entirely, the name change has certainly signalled a shift in approach. Ambient and experimental passages rub shoulders with gritty electro and techno across its 11 main tracks, while there's also room for a couple of bonus remixes: Warp's Plaid gets stuck into "Morning Blues" and Ruskin and Broom adopt another alias, Deadhand, for their remix of "Guv Three." Tracklist 01. Intro 02. Guv 1 03. Ax 04. Pinhead 05. Antiarc 06. Bronik 07. Mas 08. Morning Blues 09. Guv Three 10. Mutant Roach 11. The Quick And The Dead 12. Guv Three (Deadhand Mix) 13.
