  • Hamburg tech house artists Nils Nürnberg and Florian Kruse will play dates next month in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Individually, Nürnberg and Kruse have been regular fixtures on the Hamburg club circuit since the late '90s. They joined forces in the studio a little over a decade ago, producing energetic tech house for a variety of European and North American labels. The pair's DJ sets together largely reflect the kind of sound they've put forward on the bulk of their 12-inch releases, grounded in bumpy tech house with regular excursions into deep and more tribal-influenced sounds. In advance of their upcoming Australian debut, we caught up with the pair over e-mail, where they told us about working as a team, Hamburg, and why they won't be moving to Berlin.
Tell us about the first time you worked together in the studio. Uuhh. That's long time ago. I think we started doing music together with the new millennium. Now we share a studio (our business) since mid 2009 and work together on a daily basis. It's big fun and we complement another a lot. What's it like DJing together so often? Do each other's record selections still surprise you? Ha! No – there aren't surprises any more. We both collect our promos in the same folder in the studio, and use the same Beatport account. We go through the whole folder together and make a selection for our gigs twice a month. How often do you disagree over playing a particular track? We are absolute team players and normally choose the tracks together while playing a set. There must be some friendly competition between you two. Friendly competition is the perfect description! We are running a business together - no matter who is playing a gig, the money ends up in the same bank account. Have you ever felt like making the move to Berlin? We like Berlin a lot – it does indeed have a very special vibe. This might sound weird to people out there, as there is such a hype around Berlin, but, in our opinion, it is all slightly overrated. We think the hype reached its climax a few years ago, where it was cool and stylish to be part of a movement in a city that was developing and evolving, where the rents were low and Richie Hawtin might turn up in a café around the corner to have a coffee with Magda. It has all changed now. Berlin cannot escape capitalism – with the floods of tourists the huge amounts of people that want to move there, etc. The rents increase, things get commercialized - you know the deal! It is still a good place to live and to go out and have a great night with your friends, but, at the same time, there are other cities in Germany where it is good to live as well – especially Hamburg! Also, being creative is less about the city that you live in; it is more about yourself and what you make out of it. Sometimes you get the feeling that almost everyone who has something to do with electronic music lives in Berlin now - but quantity isn't necessarily quality. What's the best thing about Hamburg? Can you see yourself ever leaving? We have quite a solid base of artists, labels and clubs here. For instance (just to name a few): Diynamic, Knee Deep, Lovebirds, Einmusik, Stimming, H.O.S.H., Tensnake, Liebe*Detail, Dial Records and Baalsaal Club. It is simply a great city to live, and it has the of reputation being the most beautiful city in the world. From our point of view, we can definitely say that this is not true (by far), but at least it is one of the most beautiful cities. Most of our friends and family live here, and it is always good to know where home is, especially when you do a tour like the one that we are playing now. Finally, what was the last record each of you bought? In case we are talking about vinyl, that is quite a while ago. Florian: Lovebirds & Vincenzo – M.U.S.I.C. (Teardrops) Nils: Matthias Tanzmann (Album) – Restless (Moon Harbour)
