  • Salem will make their Berlin debut tonight at Festsaal Kreuzberg. The Chicago-based trio are one of the main forces behind witch house (though the band themselves call it drag), the somewhat controversial new style that came out of the US's indie scene in the past year. Along with peers like Stalker and oOoOO, Salem's sound is rooted in dark, droning synths and ultra slo-mo hip-hop beats, with the band's signature twist lying in frontwoman Heather Marlatt's angelic, Cocteau Twins-inspired vocals. Though some deride witch house as a passing fad, Salem have garnered an underground following as well as critical acclaim, with RA's Andrew Ryce praising their debut album as "something new, something different." At Festsaal Kreuzberg tonight, they'll share the stage with DJ duo Sick Girls and charmingly named acts like Gay Mormons Kissing Club and That Fucking Sara. Check out the video below for an idea of what Salem are like in concert.
