  • Sonar have announced details for their next annual festival in Spain, plus dates for spin-off events in Tokyo and London. The lineup at Sonar often balances big name crowd-pleasers with more esoteric artists, and this year is no exception: the first names announced are dubstep super-group Magnetic Man and New York composer Steve Reich. Magnetic Man shot to fame this year on the strength of their debut album and the shared credentials of their group members: dubstep pioneers Skream, Artwork and Benga. Reich, on the other hand, is one of the most important avant-garde artists of the 20th century, having forged a style of minimalist composition that resonates in much of today's electronic music (Berghain resident Ben Klock cites him as an influence, and Alex Smoke and Four Tet have both remixed his music). At the festival's inaugural concert on July 16th, Reich will play parts of his 1987 piece Sextet along with his most famous work, Music for 18 Musicians. Magnetic Man will also headline at Sonar Galicia, a second round of events taking place in the Northern city of A Coruna simultaneously with the main festival. Though no other acts have been announced, the programming will follow a similar blueprint to the events in Barcelona, but with a bit more focus on local talent. This spring, Sonar will throw two smaller events in London and Tokyo. Just like last year, A Taste of Sonar will take place at London's Roundhouse in March. SonarSound Tokyo will be a three-day affair beginning on April 1st, and will mark Sonar's first event in Japan since 2006. Details on the lineups for these events are still forthcoming.
