  • Shaun Reeves is set to embark on his maiden Australian tour, touching down in Melbourne and Sydney this week. Since moving to Berlin from Detroit, Reeves' status in the house world has risen significantly. He's garnered attention for his collaborations with fellow transplants Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson and Lee Curtis, all while regularly spinning spots like Weekend and Club der Visionaere. His DJ sets are characterized by a slick and flawless style of mixing with a steady but adventurous groove. Reeves has linked up with several labels over the years, but it's his partnership with New York's Wolf + Lamb that has nabbed him the most acclaim. His smooth and organic house sound has caught the ear of several high-profile DJs, landing on compilations from EQ Recordings and Cécille. We recently caught up with Reeves via e-mail, where he told us about the situation in Berlin, Detroit, and his new imprint, Visionquest.
You moved to Berlin in your early 20s. Can you see yourself leaving at any time in the near future? Not in the immediate future. Berlin is the only place that I can see myself calling home for now. However, in a year or two I might like to make a change and see what else is out there. New York or London would probably be the frontrunners if I were to move. How has the overall electronic music scene in Berlin changed in the six(ish) years you've been living there? Has it even changed at all? The music has definitely changed during the time I’ve been there. Over the years a number of new people have moved to Berlin, including my best friends Seth, Ryan, and Lee who have all brought different elements of their backgrounds from elsewhere but made a names for themselves while living in Berlin. This makes Berlin creatively a very fluid and exciting place to live. Do you pay much attention to what's happening in Detroit music-wise? Not so much lately. In Berlin, Detroit often feels a world away. It seems that everyone from home that’s making music these days has long since moved away from the city, apart some of the older guys like Carl Craig and Stacey Pullen. This will be your first Australian tour. Have you heard anything back from friends who have played there? Yeah, Seth has told me at length about how the Australians are up for a good party, though haven't heard much beyond that to be honest. It’s always nice to come to somewhere you’ve not played before and find out for yourself. I’m really excited to see what it will be like. What do you have coming up on the production side of things? I’m currently working on a pile of remixes, including one for Guti, Gadi Mizrahi and Deniz Kurtel for Guy Gerber’s Supplement Facts, and launching our new Visionquest label and some additional tracks with Guti. Finally, what’s in store for the rest of 2010? Is there anything in particular you'd like to get done? Yes – finally launch our new Visionquest label! Seth, Ryan, Lee and I have been working on joint projects together as Visionquest for some time now, and we’re just about to launch a label to give ourselves a platform to release all the exciting, genre-defying new music that people keep sending us. The first release should be out before the end of the year.
You can grab advanced entry to the Sydney leg of Reeves' Australian tour, going down on Saturday, right here on RA Tickets.
