  • Matthew Herbert's One Tour will hit London this June with a gig at matter. The multi-talented English producer will perform with his large collective, the Matthew Herbert Big Band, which includes Accidental artist Eska Mtungwazi and the Goldsmiths Vocal Ensemble. The Matthew Herbert Big Band is known for putting on more than just a live show–performances in the past have been highly visual, and laced with bits of politically charged theatre, such as Herbert looping the sound of himself crumpling a Daily Mail while a 70-strong choir tear up dozens more. The live show has been consistently well-reviewed, receiving five stars from The Times two years in a row and a 4.5 here at Resident Advisor. The band's reputation have earned them gigs at Royal Court, The Sydney Opera House and Broadway. The upcoming London show will support One Club, one of three Herbert albums due for release in the next few months. One Club will be the second installment in the currently unfurling One trilogy, and will consist entirely of samples recorded last fall at Robert Johnson, a Frankfurt nightclub. Though the production approach sounds rather experimental, Herbert says One Club is meant to funky as well conceptual. He explains:
"The record is intended as a document of one night in one club–a celebration of a typically fragmented, spontaneous community brought together for one night only through the idea of music and dancing. Presumably that group of people will never again be together again in one room, but there is now music to be the memory and, hopefully, move the feet."
Concerts on the One Tour will feature original music from One Club as well as selections from Herbert's earlier catalog.
