  • Sydney's monthly tech-house and techno institution Loosekaboose is set to debut at Civic Underground later this month. Signalling the beginning of promoter Future Classic's booking partnership with Civic and its resulting influence on the Civic Hotel's events calendar, Loosekaboose now will be located at the establishment indefinitely. In what will mark as a rare Sydney performance, Melbourne's Mike Callander, one of the spearheads behind burgeoning local imprint Haul Music, will head Loosekaboose's inaugural Civic Underground appearance. Sydney locals Robbie Lowe, Jimi Polar and Jamie Lloyd will be in support. In anticipation his Sydney appearance, we caught up with Mike Callendar, where he told us about his busy DJ schedule, running a label, and having what it's like having tracks praised by Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig.
Mike, what's been happening in your world lately? Plenty of gigging, we see. Anything on the production front? Yep, the gigging is out of control at the moment. I was just doing my tax return (ouch) and worked out that I played 210 gigs during the last financial year. That, coupled with studying Music Production and running the label etc. leaves me little time for much else. I haven’t written much new music of late, but I have collaborated with T-Rek on a couple of tracks for his Freakshow Disco imprint, and knocked out a few remixes that I'm very excited about. One is for an incredible Melbourne band called Subaudible Hum, and the other is for my man Craig McWhinney. Haul Music has been in effect for a little while now. For those who are unaware, when and why did you, Craig and Christian come together to form the label? The idea to collaborate on a label project with Christian has been in my mind for years, but it wasn't until we heard the incredible sound coming out of Craig McWhinney’s head that we could find a genuine identity between the three of us that could form the basis for a label. Although we're great mates, Vance and I are kind of on different musical planets. When there are two people working like this and trying to make something happen, it's a conflict... but with three different ideas the dynamic of diversity becomes an asset. Craig is the missing piece of the puzzle that we needed to make it happen, and so since December last year we've been full steam ahead in an effort to present a range of techno music that is unique and inspiring. You've opted for the digital route release-wise. Did you handle the promo yourselves? We handled our own promo in the initial stages, but now that we've got a few runs on the scoreboard it makes more sense to have someone else do the dirty work, so that we can get down to the business of making and selecting more good music. We found a great publicist in Greece who gets our stuff out to an incredible range of DJs and the feedback thus far has been awesome. You guys have had some amazing feedback for each of the releases from some pretty impressive names. Obviously that kind of feedback serves as a nice pat on the back, so to speak. Do you think you'll release physically anytime soon? The thought of guys like Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig playing our shit is the stuff dreams are made of! And to have such a cross section of the dance music community playing our stuff is exciting too. We figure we're on the right track when we get positive vibes from a diverse range of DJs such as Deepchild, Brothers Vibe, Carl Cox, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Alexkid etc. However, I don’t think we’ll end up pressing vinyl for Haul Music. Christian and Craig might have answered this question differently, but from where I stand I just don’t see the point any more. I still think MP3s sound like shit, but I'm happy to buy, release and play wave files. It's better for the environment, too! Could we please grab a current top five from you? Sure thing! 1. Johnny D – Brasil - Cocoon 2. Matthew Dear & Seth Troxler – Hurt - Spectral 3. Mike Callander – Feeder (Jamie Stevens' Broken Mix) - Haul Music 4. Sei A – Smile For Me (Chaim Remix) - Missive 5. Etienne Jaumet – Far Falling Asleep (Christian Vance Slow Burning Saxless Remix) - Versatile
