  • Mutable Instruments has a new module called Marbles. Marbles is described as a random sampler that produces chaotic gates and voltages. You can then introduce degrees of order to create organised, coherent musical ideas. Mutable says Marbles "gives the musician many different ways of imposing structure on the random events generated by the module: synchronization to external clocks, control of the repetition or novelty of the generated material, quantization of the voltages, or randomization of gates or voltages generated by traditional sequencers." Using the two rhythm outputs, you can automatically generate drum patterns, random ratcheting or multiply and divide external clocks. Gate length can also be controlled and randomised while jitter can be introduced to simulate the lag and inaccuracies of real-world players. Marbles can also function as a master clock. There are three channels for distributing random voltages. You can control the distribution of voltages with a Spread control, quantise their values into six scales, generate a laddered or smooth curve and alter the bias to a specific frequency. A Déjà-Vu control sets "the probability of reusing past material instead of sampling fresh random data." This means you can elect to recall and replay recent output information, allowing you to control the amount of repetition. Marbles follows hot on the heels of Plaits, an oscillator module released back in March. Watch a demo of Marbles.
Mutable Instruments Marbles is out this week for €299.
