  • Mutable Instruments is releasing a new module called Plaits. The Eurorack module follows in the footsteps of Braids, which is one of the most popular modules released in recent times. However, Plaits has an all-new software and hardware design—there's no screen or menu system and Braids' hidden synthesis modes have been removed, too. According to Mutable, Plaits has a more focussed sound than Braids: "Thanks to additional CV inputs, and to the use of three timbre-shaping parameters per model, Plaits is straightforward to use, and much closer to the ideal of one synthesis technique = one model. What were fragmented islands of sound in Braids are now part of a continuum of sounds." Plaits still boasts eight synthesis modes for pitched and percussive sounds respectively, including a 24-harmonic additive oscillator, two-operator FM, a chord generator, Karplus-Strong and multiple analogue drum emulations (you can see the full spec list here). There's also a virtual low-pass gate for creating snappy, percussive sounds. Watch DivKid's demo video for Plaits.
Mutable Instruments Plaits is out next week for €229.
