Birmingham City Council has permanently revoked The Rainbow Venues' license to operate.
The ruling was announced yesterday (Tuesday, November 28th), following the death of 19-year-old clubgoer Michael Trueman, who died as a result of drugs he consumed at a Halloween event last month. It was the second drug-related death at the complex in the past two years.
"We have no option but to call for Rainbow's license to be revoked," said PC Abdool Rohomon of West Midlands Police. "This is the second drug related death at the venue in two years and we have evidence that a 15-year-old boy has been admitted to the venue."
He adds: There are around 3,000 licensed premises in Birmingham and this is the only venue which has suffered drug related deaths. The most stringent measures are in place yet drugs are still being consumed inside the venue."
The Rainbow Venues, which comprises 11 spaces, is one of the UK's most important electronic music hubs. According to a tweet posted live from the hearing, the team has 21 days to appeal the decision. It's unclear what's going to happen with the events currently scheduled at the venue.
A number of DJs tweeted in response to the news.
