  • Marco Shuttle's debut album, Visione, will come out on November 18th. The producer, real name Marco Sartorelli, will issue the record through his own label, Eerie. The Italian has steadily released singles and EPs since 2007, chalking up appearances on Clone, The Bunker NY and Time To Express. Visione is his first album, and features a collaboration called "The Chaos" with countryman Donato Dozzy (the two have just teamed up for an EP as Anxur on Eerie.) "I see it as a journey that spans from the first to the last track," Sartorelli told RA. "More than anything else I have done before, it has made me discover new ground. My approach to more dance floor-oriented productions will be different after this. It has been a very enriching experience, both as an artist and as a human." We spoke with Sartorelli recently to find out more about Visione:
Why have you decided to release a debut album now? It wasn't really planned—I just started jamming with the idea of doing something very different from what I usually do, without necessarily respecting the classic tempo and sync rules involved in techno production: not starting with kick drums or percussive grooves, or setting the tempo very slow (like 30 BPM) or very fast, just away from the classic 120-135 BPM range. So I've recorded long takes with oscillators, heavy reverbs, synths, noise sounds etc, without worrying about following the beats and especially without bothering about coming up with a techno track. (I rarely do that to be honest, but I really made some special effort in that direction this time.) After recording a few sounds of the first track (which is also the first track of the album) I sent them to Dozzy. I asked him what he thought about it, in a, "Is this good or is it just nonsense crappy shite?" kind of way. He said he really, really liked it and encouraged me to do more in this direction. He then added a few sounds to what I had done and the first track was born. After that I went on recording more sounds and putting tracks together using the same process. I came up with almost all the tracks for the album within a month or so. It all came together so effortlessly, which has never happened to me before. Initially I was going to put it together as an experimental EP, but soon I realised this had to be my first album. Where did you record it? In Hackney, London, where I live. How does your fashion and design background feed into the record? Music, no matter whether we make it, we select it or we just listen to it, is an expression of taste. Being a DJ and producer has always been for me a kind of parallel life that more or less consciously has been influenced by the other stuff I'm doing. Having a fashion-designer background and education made me more aware and confident on what I like and what I don't, of what I consider beautiful or not. I've always thought of music in terms of aesthetics, vision and of course style. Electronic music in particular is about a vision of modernity, a leap towards the future. There are many similarities between music and design as far as process and in what you aim for, but there is definitely much more freedom in music. Music is an art, fashion is not. How would you say it differs from your previous releases? It has been shaped in a bubble I locked myself in without caring what was happening outside. It's been a very different process than previous EPs. It was about dealing with an intensity and a balance between the components rather than thinking of single tracks. The parts have to relate to each other in a more subtle way and have to follow a flow, a sequence. It's a bit like the difference between a short story and a novel divided into chapters. I wouldn't have seen any point in putting together five or six bangers with some silly transitional ambient tracks in between. I like to think (but it is not really just up to me to say) that this album has a narrative and an integrity as a whole.
