- The German piano artist will drop a new album next March.
Hauschka will release his next album, Abandoned City, on March 18th.
The new LP follows last year's Salon Des Amateurs, where Volker Bertelmann used his trademark prepared piano methods to replicate techno and house. Abandoned City, reportedly written in a short period of time in the free moments that the Dusseldorf-based artist could find away from his newborn son, preoccupies itself with "bright cheerful keyboard patterns and dark percussive overtones," according to a press release.
As the title suggests, the album is inspired by vacant cityscapes, with each track named after ghost towns around the world. Abandoned City sees Bertelmann in typically experimental form with prepared piano—in one instance he put wooden sticks between the strings to create drum sounds. The songs were largely written and mixed on-the-fly, with Hauschka using six microphones to record the piano direct to analogue as well as three more to feed it into different kinds of effects and filters. The LP will be jointly released through Temporary Residence Ltd and City Slang.
