  • Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton have collected every issue of the Boy's Own fanzine for their latest book. The Boy's Own project began back in the summer of 1986, when Terry Farley, Andrew Weatherall, Steve Mayes and Cymon Eckles got together to write and construct a magazine combining all of their interests: football, fashion, narcotics and, of course, music. It soon picked up quite a following once the acid house boom hit the capital in 1988, appealing to the new strain of casual ravers. As it outlines in the introduction to the very first issue, they were "aiming at the boy (or girl) who one day stands on the terraces, the next day stands in a sweaty club and the day after reads Brendan Behan while listening to Run DMC." This was just the beginning of the Boy's Own legacy, with plenty of parties and the rise and fall of both their Boy's Own and Junior Boy's Own labels set to come, but the book focuses strictly on the full set of fanzines that were released from '86 until 1992. Original copies of Boy's Own fanzines had started to fetch tidy sums on eBay, but nevertheless, Brewster and Broughton went about sourcing the magazines from original acid house revellers who'd kept hold of past issues. The project is now complete, and comes with both a foreword from the two DJ historians, and an additional interview with the original Boy's Own crew. Not only that, but people who pre-order the book will also get a one-sided 7-inch single of Bocca Junior's "Raise," which was the first release on the Boy's Own record label. Those eager to get their hands on the book can get their pre-orders in directly through the DJ History online shop, and you can also sample a 48 page taster of the book for free as a PDF download. DJ History will release Boy's Own - The Complete Fanzines 1986-92 in October 2009.
