  • If you have even a passing curiosity in Afrobeats, chances are you've heard the productions of Julian Nicco-Annan, AKA Juls. His influence on the sound and its rise to global phenomenon is writ large on Sounds Of My World, his long-awaited debut album. It's the culmination of almost a decade of production experience that's shaped the modern sound of Afrobeats, and caps off Nicco-Annan's sizeable role in contributing to the style's proliferation beyond Africa and its diaspora. Having worked with Nigerian stars like Burna Boy and Mr Eazi and fellow Ghanaians Stonebwoy and Sarkodie, Juls became a go-to collaborator for anyone bitten by the Afrobeats bug, including artists like Lauryn Hill and Tyler The Creator. In conversation with Vanessa Maria, Nicco-Annan shares the fruits of his research into the Brazilian diaspora of Ghana, discusses the dual role of producers working as A&Rs for emergent talent and the factors leading to artistic longevity.
