  • While Virgil Abloh is known primarily for his work in the fashion world, DJing and dance music culture has been central to his life for 25 years. Long before he was the artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear and the CEO of his own fashion label Off White, Abloh was working the door at Ron Trent and Sonia H's Africa Hi-Fi parties and DJing high school parties with an ad hoc collection of equipment. Coming of age in Chicago, Abloh experienced the adjacent influences of hip-hop, house, juke and aforbeat, influencing an eclectic and all embracing style of DJing that he maintains to this day. Earlier this year he released a seven-inch with Serpentwithfeet called Delicate Limbs, which was also remixed by Omar S, Bedouin and Special Request. As part of the Exchange's ongoing collaboration with Ash Lauryn's Undergound & Black interview series, we hear the details of Abloh's musical make-up, the importance of telling the stories behind the Black American history of dance music, and navigating the overground/underground dichotomy.
