  • How artists and activists are facing up to homophobia in Poland.

  • Titled "Zone-Free Zone: Poland's LGBTQ+ Community in the Arts and Activism," this talk was originally organised and aired at short notice by Unsound Festival on August 16th in response to the persecution facing the country's LGBTQ+ community. The discussion comes in the wake of the arrest of one of the panelists, Avtomat, along with nearly 50 others peacefully protesting the internment of Margot Szutowicz, who's been in pre-trial detention for two months for protesting a "Stop Pedophilia" van—a homophobic propaganda campaign that equates pedophilia with homosexuality. These events are taking place against a backdrop of brazen stigmatisation of Poland's LGBTQ+ community by Poland’s right-wing populist Law and Justice party, police, media and other homophobic actors. Philosopher Ewa Majewska, activist and director Bart Staszewski, artistic director of Tanztage Berlin, Mateusz Szymanówka, Avtomat from Oramics, and journalist Kamila Rymajdo, discuss tactics for facing the threats, with a special focus on building connections between "artists, intellectuals and emerging queer activists."
