  • Techno surrealism with the Cabaret Voltaire cofounder.

  • Alongside Richard H. Kirk and Chris Watson, Stephen Mallinder was a founding member of Cabaret Voltaire. Like the pioneering Sheffield group themselves, Mallinder witnessed the dawn of and participated in multiple important threads of British music culture, especially post-punk, rave and industrial. But as much as he interacted with and contributed to these subcultures, Mallinder was never beholden to their strictures, thanks especially to an outlook animated by avant-garde interests that's allergic to the pretentiousness that often comes with it. Mallinder's last solo record, Pow-Wow, was released in 1982. When he spoke to Joe Muggs for this podcast last year, he'd just put out the follow-up, Um Dada, a surrealist's take on early UK techno. In conversation, we hear of the cultural inputs that shaped Mallinder's outlook and the germ cells of the musical movements in which he took part.
