  • Leroy Burgess is the King of Boogie. You could also call him the life, soul, and voice of it, too. If you've been out dancing to disco, funk, soul, early electro and classic house, it's likely you will have heard the Harlem native belting out through the speakers. Never sticking long with one group, but working constantly with producer extraordinaire Patrick Adams, his powerhouse vocals can be found across classic records by Phreek, Logg, Inner Life, Black Ivory, Bumblebee Unlimited and Aleem. A humble and insightful character, Burgess never sought personal fame, which probably served him well in the long run. As he told Gabriel Szatan during this live interview at RA's annual conference at Dekmantel Festival, he is as energised by music now as at any point across a 50-year long career. The words Stevie Wonder told him as a young man still ring true: "It's important what you decide to say with your music... something that lifts the world up." The RA Exchange is also available on Spotify.
