  • Cinthie Christl has been a low key but stalwart presence in German dance music since the '90s, when she worked at Humpty Records in Saarbrücken while still in high school. By age 20 she had released on a sublabel of Low Spirit, the imprint helmed by German rave icon WestBam. But it wasn't until about 2014—after a move to Berlin, a marriage and a baby—that Christl started to receive international attention for her efforts. That's when she pitched a group of ambitious up-and-coming producers—Diego Krause, Stevn.aint.leavn, Ed Herbst and Albert Vogt—on starting a contemporary house label called Beste Modus. Within a few years, the operation had expanded to include other sublabels like Unison Wax, Beste Freunde and Christl's own dedicated Crystal Grooves imprint, all of which are now housed under the umbrella of Elevate Records, a distribution platform and online record shop Cinthie also founded. The first releases on Beste Modus flew off the shelves, and the success encouraged Christl to go deep on improving her own production methods. She joined Elissa Stolman in the RA studio in Berlin to talk about what she's learned from decades as a DJ and what she was able to teach herself about songwriting and making music. The RA Exchange is also available on Spotify.
