- King of the synths.
- Earlier this November, musicians, technologists and creative thinkers of all stripes descended on Los Angeles for the fourth edition of Loop, Ableton's conference for music makers. During the weekend-long programme, Resident Advisor's Andrew Ryce had the chance to sit down with one of the event's chief draws, sound designer and producer Richard Devine.
A lifelong sound obsessive with a particular passion for synthesis, Devine has become one of the most visible practitioners in the field, especially among Eurorack modular enthusiasts. This year he released an album of angular, abstract electronics on Venetian Snare's label, Timesig, which was written primarily on Eurorack systems. Here, he goes in-depth on the processes behind the LP, describing how he'd chain multiple racks together to perform its elaborate compositions in realtime. Finally, Devine sheds light on some of his recent sound design projects for clients like Google and Jaguar, revealing the challenges of working in emerging platforms like virtual reality and electric car design.
