  • If you shopped at Hard Wax anytime in the last couple decades, there's a chance you've met eyes with Peter Kuschnereit, the German artist known simply as DJ Pete. Kuschnereit has worked at Berlin's most influential record shop since 1991, making him its longest serving employee. In the last few years, though, Kuschnereit has taken a step back from Hard Wax—rather than selling other people's music, he's focussing more than ever on his own. Kuschnereit keeps a relatively low profile, which is unsurprising for a personality as understated as his. But his output over the years has been extraordinary, from his 1995 debut on Chain Reaction with René Löwe as Scion—the seminal label's first EP—to his live project with Sleeparchive, TR-101. Yet DJing has long been his main mode of expression, fuelled by eclectic taste, his undying appetite for cutting edge records, and his ever-evolving, technologically deft style of mixing (for an idea of where he's at today, check out his recent mix for Rinse France). 2018 is a milestone for Kuschnereit: it marks 30 years since he first started DJing. Speaking at our office in Berlin one recent winter morning, he shed a light on how his approach to DJing has evolved and the importance of Hard Wax to his life in music.
