  • For someone so integral to the development of house music, Memphis resident Larry Heard is a pretty low-key character. When Matt McDermott spoke with the legendary producer in his studio last month, he jokingly referred to himself as the "groundhog" of house music, only occasionally popping into the club to sit down, listen to music and watch the dancers. Instead, Heard remains focused on the studio. In this rare interview, he walks us through the origin stories of club classics such as "Can You Feel It" and "The Sun Can't Compare," making it clear his strong work ethic, along with singular talent, laid a blueprint for longevity. This year sees the 56-year-old Chicago house pioneer enter the spotlight again. He recently revived his Mr. Fingers and Gherkin Jerks aliases, and he's currently preparing for his first live set in two decades, a headlining slot at Croatia's Dimensions Festival in August. In February, Kanye West used a generous sample of Heard's first solo production, "Mystery Of Love," to close out his The Life Of Pablo LP. In doing so, West provided further evidence of a truth many of us hold to be self-evident: Heard's beautiful, timeless productions stretch far beyond the dance floor.
