  • For most of his young life, Robert Henke was destined to be an engineer. In a way, that's exactly what he became. Producing seminal techno records with Monolake, he could rarely fight the urge to modify and redesign his hardware. Lumière, his visually stunning new live show, is the result of years spent mastering high-powered lasers, and countless hours writing the algorithms that control them. Meanwhile, amidst all his albums, art installations and other creative projects, he helped develop Ableton Live, a bit of software that was a game-changer for electronic music and the ultimate tool for his own form of art. On a recent snowy evening in Berlin, Henke made an appearance at the MusicMakers Hacklab, a weeklong workshop at CTM 2014 that's co-hosted by Peter Kirn of Create Digital Music. In this live interview, Henke shares his wisdom with Will Lynch and the dozens of young producers gathered before him.
