  • Andy Clarke comes from a time and place in which hard graft was the only sure-fire way of attaining success as a DJ and producer. Clarke came up during the height of the rave scene in the south of England, and spent years handing out flyers and immersing himself in parties before he got to headline one of his own. He set up RAM Records with Ant Miles in 1992 when he was still a teenager, and in "Valley Of The Shadows" the pair created a drum & bass classic only months after starting the label. During the '90s, Clarke earned a reputation as one of the most technically gifted DJs not just in drum & bass, but in the whole of dance music. His star rose even higher at the turn of century when he and long-term collaborator Shimon dropped "Body Rock," a tune whose abuse of standard time signatures still sounds vital over a decade later. Until recently, the track was the last we'd heard from Clarke on the production front, but he snapped back into gear earlier this year with a remix of Major Lazer, which will soon be followed by a re-rub of Rudimental. RA's Stephen Titmus met up with Clarke in London late last month to reflect on his 20-plus years in the game. Thanks to Point Blank Music College in London for the use of their studio.
