Oval Space hosts an evening of tough, celestial electronic music on April 22nd, headlined by a rare live performance from techno legend Surgeon and Lady Starlight, supported by Berghain resident Boris and hotly-tipped UK upstart Truss.
Surgeon has been at the very forefront of the techno scene since 1994. For over twenty years he’s produced, mixed and championed a strain of murky, ruthless 4/4 music that’s profoundly influenced the likes of Ostgut Ton, PAN and Blackest Ever Black. Surgeon shows that hard can still be smart, sensuous and sophisticated, as evidenced by his series of releases for seminal techno imprints such as Tresor and Blueprint, as well as his own labels Counterbalance and Dynamic Tension Records. On April 22nd, Surgeon performs a live hardware set with frequent collaborator Lady Starlight, drawing on two decades of dedication to his techno craft.
He’s joined by Ostgut Ton mainstay Boris. Formerly found manning the counter of legendary Berlin record shop Hardwax, then working for vinyl manufacturer Handle With Care, Boris is now one of the city’s eminent techno DJs, famed for long sets, a purist approach, and a sleek, propulsive musical style that seamlessly blends Chain Reaction minimalism with a more florid Detroit sensibility. As a producer, Boris is no slouch either, releasing for the likes of Careless and Persona Records, along with his beloved Ostgut Ton.
Truss rounds out the lineup for April 22nd. If Surgeon represents the legacy of UK techno, Truss is very much the future: the young Londoner has only been concocting his brand of sparse, heavy electronics since 2007, yet already he’s carved himself a musical niche very much of his own. Under an array of aliases - MPIA3, Meibion, and one half of Blacknecks and TR//ER - Truss has along with brother Tessela and collaborator Perc championed a style of UK techno as indebted to early electro and 90s IDM as Juan Atkins and Moritz Von Oswald.
