On 5th February, Oval Space Music invites Hamburg collective Smallville Records for an exclusive label showcase, headlined by legendary DJ, producer and dance music raconteur DJ Sprinkles.
Smallville Records has long been a label that’s close to our hearts at Oval Space. Since 2006, they have consistently pushed a style of deep, dazzling house, pressing records from some of electronic music’s most important modern producers. Paired with a visual aesthetic conceived by Stefan Marx - whose art adorns the flyers of The Pickle Factory - Smallville has become an iconic part of Europe’s musical landscape, a deeply treasured label, record shop and artist collective.
For 5th February, the Smallville crew invites special guest DJ Sprinkles to headline. One of dance music’s deep thinkers and truly revered producers, Terre Thaemlitz is an American DJ whose expertise lies in gender politics, queer theory, and above all, a strain of rich, sleazy New York house. On seminal releases such as 2009 LP ‘Midtown 120 Blues’, Thaemlitz has established herself as one of dance music’s premier producers, and most vital transgender voices. Her performance alias, DJ Sprinkles, has played records everywhere from Get Perlonized to the Royal Festival Hall, and proved the depth of her collection with the 2013 mix CD ‘Where Dancefloors Stand Still’.
She’s joined by Smallville Records founders Julius Steinhoff and Just von Ahlefeld, better known by their DJing moniker Smallpeople. Just and Julius started it all in 2006, and have since repped Smallville’s deep, delicate sound in clubs across the world. The Hamburg natives have released on Oval Space favourites Underground Quality, Laid and Running Back, and are the key curators behind Smallville’s consistent release catalogue.
Also on the lineup for February 5th, Smallville wunderkind Moomin. Since his debut release for the Hamburg label in 2011, Sebastian Genz has quickly risen to prominence in Germany and beyond. A serial digger and special producer, Moomin’s records have a warm, foggy sound palette, at times playful but often moody, romantic and restrained. Christopher Rau rounds out the bill for Oval Space Music’s Smallville showcase. Another reliable purveyor of richly textured, featherlight deep house, Rau has been a Smallville affiliate from the very start, also releasing on European mega-labels Pampa and Junk Yard Connections.
