(Matty J and Ben Terry) Tirk Records www.myspace.com/tirkrecords
Tirk Residents Matty J and partner in crime Ben Terry proudly carry the label’s soulboy heart and forward thinking dancefloor sensibilities, to sweaty basements across the globe. The lads currently promote their monthly night ‘Blaze of Glory’ at The Heavenly Social in the glittering lights of London Town. In addition to this they guest at many of the Capital’s finest parties; between them having played Faith, Chibuku, Lowlife, Milky Disco, Go!Zilla and Fabric in the last 12 months. They have also spun further a-field… most excitingly a beachside festival on the Adriatic, mountain top raves in Austria, crazy pool parties in LA and lakeside sets in deepest darkest Africa. Always moving swiftly between house, disco and balearic sounds, expect… plucked basslines, a healthy dab of acid, a huge slice of soul and if you’re lucky something by the Mac.
Red Rack' Em www.redrackem.com
Danny Berman aka Red Rack'em is well known for his naughty pirate soul remixes and disco edits which have been supported by the Unabombers, Todd Terje, Swag, Yam Who, Prins Thomas as well as institutions such as Fat City and Piccadilly Records. But this is only one small part of Danny's musical voyage. As a DJ he is known for his club-rocking, genre-busting eclectic sets and this diversity is reflected in his broad output as a producer. From cutting edge Detroit 2 step to wonky disco, beatdown house and glitchy hip hop, his work is respected by heroes such as Carl Craig, the Idjut Boys, the Rush Hour crew and Domu.
Danny recently returned to his Hot Coins disco project with the Laissez Faire EP which was awarded record of the week by Piccadilly and was well supported by Prins Thomas, Chris Duckenfield, Soul Mekanik and Bill Brewster. The lead track Norway Man was licenced to Fred Deakin's 'Nu Balearica' comp on Ministry Of Sound. He is also releasing beatdown house on Atlantic Conveyors label Untracked and is in demand as a remixer. He has recently been hard at work on the Hot Coins album and the follow up EP.
This, his debut EP for Tirk, wears those influences casually, but assuredly, like a Gareth Hunt lookalike in a 1979 C + A ad, laughing and pointing at some unseen object in the distance. 'Valiant Truth' is a chunky, hypnotic 4/4 workout, all shimmering ARP style arpegios and tough kicks. Office favourite 'Whole New Way' tops off broken beats, squelchy bass, Preludey synth motifs and deep, Detroity pads washes with a spacey female vocal line or two.
'Favourite Effects' uses Nightrider-meets-Wilmot melodic touches, snatches of spoken vocal and shuffling rhythms to full sofa friendly effect, whilst 'Jazz Ending' speeds things up, rides a funky assed bassline, and does indeed, end with a healthy slice of sampled jazz noodle - a cool end for an accomplished and diverse EP.
