Abstract X Together Disco presents: Krystal Klear
Main Room: Krystal Kear
Garden: Together Disco
Whilst born in Ireland, a current resident of Manchester and a former pupil of Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, it’s hard to picture Krystal Klear anywhere other than at the helm of a shimmering dancefloor on a sun-soaked terrace in New York, circa 1986. Inspirations ranging from boogie to funk to hip-hop slip together effortlessly in to tunes that ooze slick, understated hedonism, his music conjuring up a refreshing revival of when music had 0% pretension, and 100% soul.
Dec Lennon assumed the Krystal Klear moniker in 2008, and spent little time establishing himself as one of the most on-point selectors in the country, which led to him providing a guest mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ fabled Radio 1 show in early 2010. His own tracks first found a home on Dub Organizer (‘Greensilver’) and Irish label All City, for whom he followed up 2010’s ‘Tried For Your Love’ (backed by a remix from Hudson Mohawke) with the club smash ‘We’re Wrong’ in Spring of last year. It was around the same time as these first releases that he was blooded in to what has become one of the most enviable residents family in (at least) the UK – Manchester’s Hoya:Hoya. Sharing the decks with Lone, Jon K and Eclair Fifi, and club founders Illum Sphere and Jonny Dub, Krystal Klear’s knack for an impeccably selected and eclectic set was in no danger of looking out of place here.
Throughout, Krystal Klear has enjoyed strong support from the airwaves and dancefloors alike. On top of Mary Anne Hobbs’ early rubber-stamp of approval, Annie Mac, Trevor Nelson, Toddla T, Gilles Peterson and Rob Da Bank have all hit the play button on their shows, and he now even hosts his own regular slot on Rinse FM. In the clubs, his records have found themselves in the bags of selectors ranging from Hudson Mohawke to Brodinksi via the likes of Skream, Jackmaster and Joy Orbison. Meanwhile an ability to maintain an electric atmosphere over the course of an entire set, no matter what stage of the night, has seen him become an in-demand choice for promoters not only across the country, but throughout the world as well, having already taken in shows from New York to Singapore, and with his horizons extending further all the time.
