Sat 31st May - Be Presents ...with Citadels, The Joy Formidable, Collapsing Cities + Matthew !WOWOW! DJ
…like waking up in your favourite brat-pack movie and feeling aroused…hook laden pop songs with an aggressive edge make an exciting musical melangé and a blistering live show. Fresh from supporting Architecture in Helsinki these starlings are set to make quite an impression in 2008…
THE JOY FORMIDABLE live
“The Joy Formidable make monster party-pop tunes for rave-munching gurners who’ve binged on too many Golden Skans and are feeling the burn.” says NME. The energy of Klaxons and co, the epic guitar of Russell Bloc Party, and a voice that calls upon the demons of Elastica and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The threesome have only been together for a year and already we can’t wait to hear more of their dream-pop, perfect link between radio friendly ‘guitar music” and post prime-time indie.
COLLAPSING CITIES live
From the label that brought the world Late Of The Pier, Cajun Dance Party, Laura Marling and Jamie T come Collapsing Cities, who have just moved to Britain to capitalise on their reputation back home in New Zealand for exuberant, twisted post-punk indie rock. Twisted? The band's debut single Fear Of Opening My Mouth features the playful warning, "Next year I think I'll kill myself", and it's jolly enough to catch on with its "I've got the fear" chorus, unison sung-spoken vocals, handclaps, curvilinear guitar pattern and shambling rhythm just made for collapsing students at indie discos. Fans in high school of exponents of askew indie (Pavement, Truman's Water), CC played their first gig exactly two years ago, in May 2006. "We're still toddlers”, they say, “but confident toddlers".
MATTHEW !WOWOW! DJ
Creative polymath Matthew Stone cut his Dj teeth playing to crowds of up to 1500 at the notorious !WOWOW! art parties he organised in South London squats. Next calling from there was to be resident at the now legendary Boombox. His peak-time party sets which include electro, house and disco provide dancefloor mayhem as only he can!
Plus music from your resident host David H playing New Wave, Electro and Disco in The Main Room.
Be presents The Non-Stop Electric Cabaret in The South Gallery, a Rock n Roll burlesque featuring the exquisite Miss Vicky Butterfly and this week's guest Agent Lynch. DJ Bioux provides the perfect musical accompaniment to the evenings performances, spinning a potent mix of 50s Garage, Sleaze and Exotica.
