Social's Ninelives The Cat Leaving Party

  • Following on from the success of McQueen’s “Don’t be Fooled” single launch party last month, the next chapter in the Social saga is to say goodbye to one of our great Friends and Residents “Nine Lives The Cat” who leaves the UK for good in June to tour America and put pen to paper on a new album with his band “Death Set”. We thought it'd be a nice touch to ask NineLives to do the lineup, so we did, and here it is:- NineLives the Cat (Sokolov Sounds, Ruff Dog, West Records) Diverted (TCR, AIR, Diverted Traffic) 2 Bit Thugs (Freek Records) with Social residents McQueen, Richie Balboa, WaxJellyFish and Mark Pearse NineLives the Cat started back in Australia playing with live bands in this little seaside metropolis called the Gold Coast. The last 4 years have seen him living in the UK and releasing a catalogue of well received records through the likes of West Records, Sokolov Sounds, Hot To Trot Records, Ruff Dog Recordings, Rocstar Records, Diverted Traffic and Mofo either as an original artist, remix artist or mc on vocal collaborations. Dj’ing in the UK has been something else NineLives has excelled at; aside from his residency at Social he has DJ'd and MC’d at parties like Breakspoll @ Fabric, Chew The Fat @ The End, C64, Air @ Cargo, Get Busy @ Traffik, TCR Records @ Lockside Lounge, White Rhino @ The Volks, Supatronix @ Clockwork and in 2007 he hosted the Breaks Day stage at the Glade Festival. Also being a member of the Diverted Live project has lead to them playing live for Ali B’s monthly Air Records party at Cargo which has been a great balance between rocking turntables and then being able to rock a stage with instruments and kids on the level. Touring has taken NineLives back to Australia twice as well as shows in Ireland, France and America following a guest mix on Annie Nightingale’s Radio 1 show and Jay Cunning’s Kiss FM. So from now the story goes like.... NineLives The Cat is soon to be based in Baltimore, USA. This scenario kinda shaped up after touring with B-more punk buddies The Deathset (Counter Records – Ninja Tune). After playing a solid month of shows through Europe earlier this year, an east coast tour with them in the States back in 2006 and a visa ready to expire here in the UK, he figured America seemed like the next logical thing to go and get. "Playing with the Deathset live is a bunch of fun that not many words can describe clearly enough" he says, It’s a "you really have to be there" kinda moment and it kicks. So for the year ahead he’s gonna be completely focusing on touring with those kids and with studio time squeezed in between the road trips there will be plenty more new releases from the likes of NineLives The Cat for sure!!! Original works, remixes, vocal co-labs, shows and touring, standard debauchery.... his shit is now worldwide!!! Diverted have rapidly established themselves as one of the most innovative electronic acts around through their live monthly residency at Ali B’s long running Air night where they have been the house band since early 2007, playing alongside the likes of Minuit, The Bays, Thee Earls, TCR Allstars, Bastila and The London Breakbeat Orchestra. At Diverted’s core are mid twenty year olds Stephen Baxter and Lee Richardson. Between them they have been responsible for a number of releases across labels such as TCR, Solokov Sounds and Ali B’s Air Recordings label which has gained them huge support amongst scene leaders. Meanwhile their own Diverted Traffic label which they run from their quirky retro studio in rural Hertfordshire, has been responsible for helping to establish artists such as Mr No Hands, Tom Tonic and Dekoy. Alongside guest appearances on Annie Nightingale’s Radio 1 Show and Jay Cunning’s Kiss 100 show, Diverted also host their own regular slot on NSB Radio. They have also toured extensively across countries including Australia, America, Spain, Russia and Hungary. 2008 will see them take the whole band on the road with dates at some of the UK’s biggest festivals already confirmed. Their latest single has already been picking up support from the likes of The Plump DJs, Lee Coombs and Meat Katie. The club bruiser, ‘Frederick’ and the lush down-tempo ‘Summer Hiding’ will be available for general release in early 2008 through Air Recordings and is a taster of what to expect on Diverted’s forthcoming debut album, due for release in autumn 2008. 2 Bit Thugs expect to bring their trademark 'gangster house' sound with wobbling bass, wonky 4/4 beats and glitchy rudeboy vocals. With releases out on Freek records alongside Twocker & Stupid Fresh and remixes of The Bulgarian, Vlad Sokolov and Thrillabeats due out soon the thugs have pricked the ears of both the house and breaks scenes. And the Social residents McQueen, Richie Balboa, WaxJellyFish and Mark Pearse McQueen is a founder member and resident of the legendary Technique in Leeds, alongside Chew The Fat's Kid Blue, and more recently the increasingly acclaimed Social in London. Over the last nine years McQueen has cut his teeth spinning the best in underground breaks, house, techno and electro and has played with a huge range of djs and producers from across the spectrum of underground dance music both around the UK , and abroad in Spain, Poland , Japan and Ukraine, most notably at Tokyo's Womb and Air clubs with Meat Katie and Koma & Bones. Alex's own productions have received airplay from Annie Nightingale and he has recently been signed to emerging breakbeat label, Edit Records. His first release on Edit is due for release on May 12th, and there are more tracks in the pipeline on their way. Over the coming month you can catch Alex at both his residencies in London and Leeds and at Microfest in Barcelona. Richie Balboa is emerging as one of breakbeat’s fastest rising Djs coming off the back of a year spent destroying dance floors across the UK and more recently into Europe alongside artists such as the Utah Saints, Atomic Hooligan and Tayo. He is the manager of NSB Radio, the largest Breaks radio station in the world recently winning the 'Best Radio Station' award the 2008 International Breakspoll Awards. At the same time as this he co-manages record label Diverted Traffic seeing them twice nominated as ‘Best Breakthrough Label’ at Breakspoll 07 and 08. His hectic DJ schedule continues this Summer with a Residency at London Club Herbal as well as set’s at Drop Beat’s not Bombs at The Birmingham Rainbow Warehouse complex, Nassfest BMX festival and Hassfest Beach festival in Taunton. WaxJellyFish is a fresh new face to Social and as an up and coming female producer has already received airplay on Kiss 100, before any tune has even been signed! Her DJ sets have are well known for their variety and sweet vibes, catch this up and coming star for free while you still can! Mark Pearse as a DJ has played at some of the capitals best nights including Supatronix, Nuskoolbreaks and the Drop off with the likes of Atomic Hooligan, Soul of Man and BLIM.
