After a successful launch party with a packed house for Thomas Bullock and Misha P.A.M., our second installment of our residency coincides with ReviveHER Bi-Bop’s birthday and he’s pulling out all the stops to make this a momentous occasion. We welcome you to one of the most promising musical experiences you’ll get to see. We welcome one true O.G. from NYC – DJ NATURE
DJ NATURE (Golf Channel / NYC) – 3 Hour Set
DJ Nature is one of our most elusive artists to date. There’s very few DJs that can boast a career of 30 years DJing. The revival of Harvey comes close, yet the return of one of the most crucial if not, shadowy figures in modern beat making, Milo Johnson aka DJ Nature, has been well worth the wait. His first project was with the Wild Bunch, the Bristolian sound system that went on to form Massive Attack and the solo artist Tricky, carving a channel for the underground Bristol scene that would see Trip Hop, Drum N Bass and Dubstep follow in the wake of its path.
Back then as DJ Mil’o, with deep roots in Japan and as far back as the late 80s, he had recorded “Return of the Orginal Artform” on Mo Wax and “Thumpin” with K.U.D.O on Major Force records. With the Major Force all stars, Milo toured with the Jungle Brothers, Cash Money and Public Enemy whilst in Japan.
Never one to jump a musical ship unless it feels right, Milo moved to New York in 1989, where he met Frank Mendez (Nu Groove records) and frequented the underground clubs and took in the sounds of Larry Levan at The Choice, Louie Vega at The Sound Factory and Tony Humphries at Zanzibar. It was there that the house sound of the Nature Boy was born, with some choice cuts and underground bombs on Tomato Records and an album on Black Label throughout the early 90s, receiving support from the likes of Tony Humphries on Kiss Fm and even remixed Naomi Daniel along with Chez N Trent, Carl Craig and Deep Dish.
Fast forward to 2010 where it took Milo just a minute to come to the forefront of the musical media with his first single on Golf Channel recordings, “Win, Lose and Dance” - well worth the incubation period!
DJ Nature was born!
“Win, Lose and Dance” put DJ Nature firmly back on the map. Licensed by MOS for their “Underground Disco” compilation and receiving a very rare 4.5 by Resident Advisor’s Todd Burns, few out there knew that Miles had been plying his trade since the early 80s. The “Fwd Ever” E.P. followed shortly on Golf Channel, finding it’s way into the sets of DJ Harvey, Gilles Peterson, Tim Sweeney, Eddie C, Vakula and many others as well as ending up on end of year charts for Beats In Space, DJ History and Faith. Mother Nature only grew stronger last year, with 4 more releases on Golf Channel and another rare 4/5 review from RA for “Celebrate Your Life”.
Milo also has strong connections in the world of fashion and other areas of music: going way back with the Stussy tribe; collaborating musically for Nike; releasing limited mix CDs for “The Hideout” store; his work with Jazzy Sport (Japan), remixes for Delusions of Grandeur and Groovement Recs; recording “We Know” with Tricky for the David Chapelle film “Half Baked”, not to mention touring the globe at one time with Tricky and even giving Tricky his name!
With just two discreet appearances last year with his Laser Magnetic friends, Alex and Johnny, and “DJ Nature vs Floating Points” at Plastic People, this will be his first proper UK gig since then and way before. With a feature for Faith magazine, a podcast for Giles Peterson and most importantly his double pack, vinyl only album “Return of the Savage” with completely new material on Golf Channel, all due to drop end of March –this makes for an unmissable, inimitable affair.
THE RIOTOUS ROCKERS (ASBO / Stealth / Bugged Out!)
The Riotous Rockers are a DJ partnership formed from a chance meeting on the dancefloor of Fabric in 2003. The duo became residents at Liars Club in their hometown of Nottingham alongside bands such as Franz Ferdinand and Scissor Sisters long before they became household names. You could say in that case, they were Nottingham’s answer to Glasgow’s Optimo.
Their distinguishable energetic party sets, combining house, disco, techno with a stylistic force de rigeur, earned them regular sets at Bugged Out!, Fabric, Stealth, Wax:On and Razzmatazz in Barcelona.
In 2005 their own club night ASBO was born, in collaboration with Alvin C. The second Saturday of the month at the Lock Tavern (Camden), occasionally Stealth (Nottingham) and even as far as Spain, has seen them host Erol Alkan, Joakim, Optimo, Fake Blood, Todd Terje, Horse Meat Disco, Mark Moore, Riton, Simian Mobile Disco, Soft Rocks, Jon Carter, Sinden, Metronomy and every other band and DJ in the world they have basically played with. Boggy’s wedding even featured sets from Erol Alkan and Matt Walsh. So who knows what’s gonna happen upstairs!
FLORA YIN-WONG (Dazed & Confused)
In support upstairs we have Dazed Digital assistant editor Flora Wong. Flora has kept close tabs on ReviveHER and has managed to feature several of our guests in the past on the Dazed site, including Jackmaster, Misha (P.A.M.) and our EFES rave.
A keen writer, Flora got her break at Slutty Fringe, the whimsical blog that focused on music with an orientation toward fashion, art and design, with an identifiable humility. She is also contributor to Dazed and Confused, AnotherMag.com, Under/Current, INDIE Mag, Soho House Magazine and the Phonica blog.
Her busy journalistic schedule and passion for music, through her event reviews on RA and music reviews / interviews for Juno caught the attention of people within the industry, making it no surprise that she can also be seen behind the decks at the likes of Dollop, Fabric’s Kill ‘Em All and Fill Yer Boots.
She counts DJing house & techno, eating pastries & falling over as her favourite things - that order of preference. You can check her last mix for the Pejhy Blog here. A mix for ReviveHER is forthcoming.
GUESS WHO (Bi-Bop / Nicholas Feel / KITT)
The basement gets the Guess Who treatment from ReviveHER man Bi-Bop, Silver Magic host and ReviveHER resident Nicholas Feel and true, working club DJ / Shoreditch Radio programmer, Kitt Proudfoot.
Guess Who is the collective term for the triumvirate, who will celebrate their launch officially with a day time / night time party on Sunday 3rd June (The Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday) with two secret guests and you have to guess who!!
Before then, you might wanna check out the back to back mix they did for Bugged Out! here, which has received many hits since it’s airing two weeks ago! Before Bi-Bop’s birthday with DJ Nature they will also air their first radio show on Roundhouse Radio, which will simultaneously see the Silver Magic show become the Guess Who show!
With appearances at Croatia’s Echo Festival and a Secret House party at Secret Garden Party this summer, we can safely say 3 is the magic number.
Stay tuned for plenty more Guess Who
ReviveHER haven’t really ever had a 1st or 2nd birthday. We kind of started in 2009. But if there ever was a chance to celebrate a birthday for RH, it would be Bi-Bop’s with DJ Nature rockin it for 3 hours in the basement of Dalston Superstore. We hope to see you there …
