Juan Atkins is frequently called “the Godfather of Technoâ€. He is credited with having started the techno scene in Detroit - the first “techno scene†in the history of music - with his first musical project, Cybotron. The period following Atkins entrance into the Detroit music scene is commonly called the “first wave of Detroit Technoâ€, which heavily influenced the future generations of American electronic music and electronic music abroad. Events like the Detroit Electronic Music Festival are a continuation of Atkins’ legacy. Following his departure from Cybotron, Atkins went on to create the hugely influential Metroplex record label - releasing groundbreaking solo records under a number of different aliases, as well as records by many of Detroit's significant techno innovators. His primary solo projectModel 500 continues to this day, and is widely respected for its continued quality output - maintaining his progressive attitude towards music technology and still gaining new fans. Atkins' DJ crew, Deep Space, was one of Detroit's most influential and cutting edge, bringing together all the major players in Detroit Techno, and setting the precedent for the legendary "Music Institute".
