Our final show of 2009 is an Afro Funk special and Xmas party rolled into one. It features one of our favourite bands of the year, launching their debut album with us, alongside full on DJ sets and live percussion getting you on the floor all night long.
The Strides return to the Basement after their sell out show with us back in May. Following in the tradition of international Afro acts including Antibalas and the Soul Jazz Orchestra the Strides catchy vocals, mesmerising grooves and original Afro Funk sound are taking Australia by storm!
Drawing from influences such as Fela kuti, Tony Allen, Bob Marley and Augustus Pablo the Strides live sets combine high energy dance music with a laid back dub experience. A formula that has led to a string of high profile gigs in 09 and the release of their excellent debut self titled album which this party showcases.
This 11 piece outfit feature a heavy rhythm and powerful horn section and consist of some of Sydney’s finest jazz, blues and world music instrumentalists - vocal talents include Ras Roni, one of Australia's true masters, and special guest Lil Gzeus who feature on the album.
For this special Jazz Rooms showcase, the Strides will be performing 2 live sets.
DJ Russ Dewbury provides the Jazz Rooms unique soundtrack connecting dance vibrations from all strands of black music past present and future. With a firm emphasis on dance floor energy, expect full on Afro style club sessions through the evening and after the band until late!
Russ’s involvement with the Afro Funk movement goes right back to the later 90s with the release of his groundbreaking Africa Funk (Harmless) and Club Africa (Strut) compilations which led directly to a career revival for legends including Tony Allen and others spawning a whole host of new acts as well.
Special guest djs include Frenzie and Mr Chad 2 of Sydney’s finest selectors and live afro percussionist
