DJ ANDY SMITH
Andy Smith was the first DJ to release a multi-genre mix album on a major label. When his mix-CD The Document hit the streets back in 1998, it became the soundtrack for a generation who had heard Coldcut's Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more - The Document filled the void.
It segued tracks from artists such as Tom Jones (way before he came back in vogue with Reload and newer tracks such as recent top ten hit Stoned in Love); Peggy Lee (sample source for the Beastie Boys single Ch-Check It Out); The Jungle Brothers and even The Spencer Davis Group. This was new to record buyers but for Smith a mixed bag of treasures has always formed the typical contents of his DJ set.
This appreciation of different genres made Smith the ideal person to provide sample material for Portishead on their first two albums. He went on to make his name as the band's international tour DJ – reflecting their respect for both the art of digging for breaks and hip-hop scratch DJ-ing. Hip-hop elements formed the basis of the unique Portishead sound.
Andy was also included in the Top 20 Greatest DJ’s of all time in this Future music website and when not internationally touring runs the well awesome Reach Up Disco Wonderland Collective and is a monthly resident at the multi-level behemoth that is The South London Soul Train.
Keb Darge is a leading man when it comes to discovering music and bringing it to the people.
At the age of 22, Keb moved to London from the Northern Soul Scene in Wigan and ceased to be a DJ. Music promoters from then approached him, asking him to come back to DJing. He obliged and gave the Northern Soul phenomenon exposure in London through his performances, pivotal in creating the London Soul Scene that stays strong to this day.
The creator of the term "Deep Funk" started a funk night in London which eventually turned into Legendary Deep Funk at Madame Jo Jo's), a massive inspiration to famous people like DJ Shadow, Paul Weller, Cut Chemist, Rza and a many of the worlds top hip-hop & house producers as well as not so famous people who are intrigued by the music he discovers, a wild dancer, a skilled martial artist, and a good friend!
Nowadays he is following his passion for wild Sixties Garage, 50s Rockabilly & Surf he continues to run a regular Club Night - The legendary "Lost & Found"
DARGE & SMITH have a large record collection that is going to create a great alternative vibe at the Building, and judging from the past track record we can expect a glorious selection of shouters and talc dusted floor-shakers in the heart of Peckham!
