Launched in 2014, Red Bull Music Academy’s acclaimed Diggin’ in the Carts web series explored the untold history of Japanese video game music of the ‘80s and ‘90s. This autumn we’re bringing Diggin’ in the Carts to audiences across the globe, featuring Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima, alongside Hyperdub boss Kode9 and local artists whose work celebrates the electronic sounds of an era.
Kode9 will present a new performance using visuals created by Kōji Morimoto, the Japanese animator who has worked on films like Memories and The Animatrix. Yuzo Koshiro, who some have called the greatest game music composer of the 16-bit age, will perform together with Motohiro Kawashima, a renowned composer who was Koshiro’s collaborator on Streets of Rage 2 and 3 and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Both sets will feature VJing by Planet Mu’s Konx-Om-Pax, meanwhile Diggin’ in the Carts host and producer Nick Dwyer brings his metagame with a DITC音 set. Special guests for the UK leg of the tour will be Hyperdub’s low-end ambassador, Ikonika, who plays a special set drawing on the sounds of classic video games, and next gen renegade Grandmixxer presenting VGriMe, a set exploring the influence VGM has had on grime riddims and instrumentals ever since the genre came to the fore in the early 2000s.
Ahead of the event, Yuzo Koshiro will sit down with Nick Dwyer at 6.30PM for a conversation spanning his life’s work and the experience of performing VGM compositions live onstage. Afterwards, Data Discs, the London-based label dedicated to remastering and releasing classic game soundtracks like Sonic Mania, Revenge of Shinobi and Streets of Rage on vinyl, will present a multi-media performance combining vinyl, modded consoles and visual effects.
