DJ PHONO dj phono has no fear of failing, for if he shall fail it will be with utter jubilation. he has nothing to loose, but is willing to risk everything. this makes him uncomfortable and unpredictable for all those who dare nothing in life. one thought that never troubles him during his morning toilet is: "impulsive menschen kennen keine grenzen". even though being a member of the formation deichkind has evolved dj phono into a different person one should refrain from confusing the two. neither does dj phono produce music for deichkind, nor does their repertoire appear in his dj set. he is the brain behind the deichkind liveshow and the whole overriding concept hidden within the techno lunacy. right from the off he has continuously and tirelessly attempted to force a gap between proletarian and sophisticated culture. he is a hellbender and merciless critic of the band luring them towards the end of the branch. dj phono and bon jovi have nothing in common. this is why phono composes music that he likes. “party is my profession” is what he usually replies when being asked, why at 5 am in the morning he is still to be found at the pudel club - sober. there is always something new to discover, no matter where you look. this explains why he has turned his back on the usual “hau den lukas”-method and ignores expectations. he rather likes to pick the bananas from the trees of slow mounting tensions, because dj phono is never bored on stage: yes, he will even turn of his mobile phone off just to be alone with you. categories and limitations are only to be vanquished. people often create strange convoluted sentences in an attempt to describe his music. someone once said very fittingly: “emotional-temporary-minimal-but-then-more-and-more-techno-with- pop-appeal-thru-techhouse-suitable-for-dancing-taking-the-cake-techno-electro+surprise”. music associated with labels like kompakt, get physical, dial, playhouse, smallville, systematic, dfa, environ, ibadan, border community, ostgut ton, pampa, circus company, bpitch control and liebe detail. boring, dreary minimal-poppycock, is simply left out. 2011 he will start a new chapter. dj phono will finally release his new album “welcome to wherever you’re not” on hamburg’s record label diynamic. the release will be flanked with a supranormal liveperformance. LEDs, hydraulics, roboter, radio technology and projections alternate the room. daft punk and etienne de crecy will be delighted. the concept comprises artists developing individual visual concepts for each album song and implying the respective localities and contexts. dj phono is also a member of the band extra (1978). in 1998 he was european-vice-scratch-champion and incidentally, when he’s in the mood, he also produces and mixes music for others – former cooperation’s include artists such as erobi- que, egoexpress, commercial breakup, international pony and die goldenen zitronen. dj phono has no hobbies.

    Selected discography

http://www.wordandsound.de/article/70651 In June 2011 DJ Phono will release his first Album on Hamburg’s record label Diynamic. „Welcome To Wherever You’re Not“ is a work of heart, of emotions - of awakened, flourishing, and unrequited feelings. It’s something of a kind that could neither be accomplis- hed within a nights work nor even in a cycle of nights, but only in good time. DJ Phono and his producer Jimi Siebels (A DIFFERENT JIMI / EGOEXPRESS / IT’S RECORDS) allowed themselves to take this time, two years, to be precise. “I didn’t work consistently on this album, but waited for those moments, that enabled me to work out of a cer- tain emotion. This very often made it possible to captu- re this momentary emotion within my music. For me these are those sublime moments, that a musician is sometimes lucky to have – the feeling of being able to manifest a mood in music. Music and musician as a medium, if you like... During the last year, I was often in an emotional state that led to these kinds of moments and allowed me to do just that. And of cour- se Jimi is a very special character with a discerning sense for little inconspicuous details.” The outcome – „Welcome To Wherever You’re Not“ – is an album that DJ Phono likes to hear himself. And Jimi probably does as well. It defines itself in an inter- jacent, between here and there, between main floor and backroom, between big and small, between yesterday, today and tomorrow, between pop and club, or in short: in between worlds. At Hamburg’s fish market, not far from the Pudel Club where DJ Phono feels at home, they will lament the amount of meat being displayed while at the Schlachthof meat market, just opposite of Phono’s studio, some say they sense the smell of fish. The florist around the corner however is full of praise for the wide variety of rank growth. One quality all 12 songs from „Welcome To Wherever You’re Not“ have in common is their remarkable fashion of elegant reserve. They politely, cautiously, discreetly ask for a bit of attention without letting them- selves get hustled into oblivion. „Soll ich ein Loch gra- ben?“ however stands out as it unfolds into an impo- sing 8 ? minute (rave) drama: all the hands go up in the air when the bass drum finally kicks in towards the middle of the song. Yet in the end even this rogue result appears as the nice, little brother of those saw tooth monsters. There is no danger of dehydration, blackouts or serious organ failure. Instead this musical smiley just spreads sunny euphoria. The rest is euphony. Björn Beneditz (WCW Gallery) and Carola Wagenplast (Jochen Schmith) took up on the essence of the music, which inspired the creation of a sublime booklet bearing the hallmark of „Welcome To Wherever You’re Not“. Each album will be handcraf- ted and is therefore an individual piece of art. DJ Phono will be introducing this album live. For this reason he has collaborated with the world famous and stylistically leading artist group JOCHEN SCHMITH - who are renowned for their conceptual works in rooms and spaces and have developed a one of a kind stage show that will be introduced on occasion of the release tour in Autumn 2011. Together they have con- cieved a delicate and yet serene chorography made of silicon crystals and computer science in the context of club music. Self-constructed prototypes made of robot technology perform a mechanic dance notation and sanctimoniously seduce girls and boys. Sound and visuals coalesce in a symbiosis and let us reach the destination of our voyage.
