Bi-Bop is the founder and resident DJ of ReviveHER.
He has also worked for various record labels, before managing events for secretsundaze, working for the formidable Warm Agency now part of Elastic Artists, before DJing and running ReviveHER full..
James Cooper, aka Bi-Bop, began his DJ career as resident at Birmingham’s Custard Factory for long established nights ‘Procreation’ and ‘Magik’ playing alongside many world renowned DJs such as Miss Kittin and Felix Da Housecat as well as underground names such as DIY Soundsystem and Luke Vibert. Whilst studying at Manchester and already having a strong link within the dance music scene amongst the extensive Manchester student community and party scene that exists there, Bi-Bop was asked to help relaunch Bugged Out! in 2005 and quickly became resident DJ playing alongside Erol Alkan, Justice, Mylo, Simian Mobile Disco, 2 Many DJs and many more. His DJing has taken him across the country and world including, Paris, Milan, Berlin, Istanbul, Tokyo, Croatia, New York and Moscow.
Now Bi-Bop resides between London and Tokyo and has worked for indie labels Cool In The Pool / People In The Sky, an imprint of !K7 records, has managed events for alfresco rave organisers secretsundaze and has been part of the formidable Warm Agency. He plays an active role as a DJ and promoter in the underground London scene running ReviveHER.
His regular party, ReviveHER, which started in 2009 at James Priestley's project, The CAMP, has hosted two fashion parties during LFW at Dalston Superstore in 2010 and hosted the second room at many Bugged Out! Events, several secretsundaze parties, including bank holiday August and NYE 2011 and 2013, curated and performed a ReviveHER Boiler Room line up with Tim Sweeney, Young Marco and Land of Light.
Having held down a residency at Dalston Superstore for over 2 years, ReviveHER outgrew its roots and relocated further East to Hackney Wick from the ever over trendified Dalston, seeking out loft spaces, theatres, listed buildings and warehouses in the ever creative blank canvas of Hackney Wick. Each event is themed and hones in on interesting acts from various genres, scenes and eras and concentrates on reviving them and reviving the cool that many parties in the East have lost. Juxtaposing the forgotten legend with the future hero; master and apprentice; opening barriers between crowds, mindsets and demographics.
ReviveHERs have have included Tim Sweeney, MCDE, Move D, Bicep, Prosumer, Jacques Renault, Lovefingers, Thomas Bullock, DJ Nature, Gatto Fritto, Lord Of The Isles, Baris K, Felix Dickinson, Tiago, DJ Kaos, COS/MES, Chida, TBD, Throne of Blood records, secretsundaze, Midland, Koreless, Julio Bashmore and recently appointed Radio 1 debutant Jackmaster… full list here - http://ymlp.com/zg0XRQ
2013 saw some huge guest bookings and collaborations, such as the first party of the year with leading UK record store Phonica Records at Corsica Studios featuring Vakula's UK debut and a return to the concept of Dogme East under the ReviveHER name. Dogme East was a high concept one off party collaboration with BuggedOut! And Field Day’s John Burgess, with a law abiding booking policy which saw the “Jack 2 Jack” party (Farley Jackmaster Funk, Jackmaster, Jack The Tab, Just Jack), get voted no.1 critics choice for TimeOut, feature a half page preview in the Metro and was awarded No.1 In The Guardian Pick Of The Week. The next one played on the acronym of highly regarded young house producer MCDE, featuring support from Eddie C, Move D and Mark E.
ReviveHER has also appeared at festivals such as The Big Chill, Field Day, Echo and Unknown in Croatia and is now a regular feature at the Bugged Out! Weekender.
ReviveHER Records is also set to launch in 2014, featuring breakthrough artists and remixes by previous guests from the party only as well as a various artist sampler label called W.H.O featuring new found artists alongside established names such as Mark E, Gonno and Takuya Matsumoto. Early support already from the likes of Tim Sweeney, Young Marco, Boiler Room, secretsundaze, Mark E, Timothy Fairplay and Andrew Weatherall on their first record.
James is also launching Studio WHO in March 2014 along with other ReviveHER members Will Best and Nick Hadfield. Studio WHO is formerly known as the loft space in the top floor of Mother Studios, where ReviveHER have been exclusively doing their Hackney Wick loft parties since the end of 2012. The beautiful space sits in the apex of a former chocolate factory overlooking the Olympic site to the East, Canary Wharf to the South and The City skyline over Victoria Park to the West. Having revamped the main space and building two smaller studios, Studio WHO will be an exciting new destination for parties, exhibitions, events and shoots in East London.
On a recent move to Tokyo, Bi-Bop has already cemented a reputation there having played at Air twice in 2014, Womb, with the first ReviveHER party set in mid March at Oath and plans for bigger events later in 2014 at Air.
ReviveHER has been featured in reputable press such as Dazed, DJ Mag, Resident Advisor, The Metro (London), Manchester Evening News and the Guardian Guide Pick of the week, as well as many other reputable websites and blogs.
James Cooper AKA Bi-Bop is equally adept musically in the fashion world, having been booked to play many a store launch and fashion party by designers and clients. Having been asked to curate, mix and edit the show music for the launch of Westfield Stratford, Europe’s largest shopping centre, other clients have included Harpers Bazaar, Lyle & Scott and Nike.
Bi-Bop's repertoire features a broad array of dancing music falling in to Disco and House. However, his versatility lends its self from rare pysch/prog rock to post punk, post dub step, latin, funk, 90s RnB, Soul, Pop Noir and beyond, picking up heavy influences from these genres and many of the DJs he's booked and from the artists whose music he buys. Track selection and a firm eye on the crowd and occasion is priority, having interspersed any of these genres with each other. Still a believer in vinyl, he takes this as his first choice of medium and won’t be caught playing off his laptop.
