Close to the Leidseplein in Amsterdam's centre, Melkweg (Milky Way) is one of the city's most well-known electronic music venues. Open since 1970, Melkweg is a former dairy factory renovated into a number of multi-purpose rooms. The ground floor includes two performances spaces, the 1500-capacity Max and the 700-capacity Oude Zaal, plus a gallery and restaurant. Upstairs has a number of smaller rooms including two theatres, while the Rabozaal (opened in 2009) hosts large-scale theatre events on certain nights of the year.
It's part of the Amsterdam night mayor's Nacht voor de Nacht campaign, which aims to defend nightlife from real-estate development. De School, Shelter, Melkweg and Claire are among the clubs included.
